Description

Whoever calls Game Sonic a Gary Stu

- Has no grasp of what the term actually means
- Is clearly oblivious to the multiple times in the games in which Sonic is depicted as being far from perfect and not immune to criticism from other characters
- Is also clearly oblivious to what Sonic's position of the main protagonist actually entails

The first point "Has no grasp of what the term actually means" screams true of those who label Sonic a Stu. The term "Gary Stu" can be described a thus;

He's exotically beautiful, often having an unusual hair or eye color, and has a similarly cool and exotic name. He's exceptionally talented in an implausibly wide variety of areas, and may possess skills that are rare or nonexistent in the canon setting. He also lacks any realistic, or at least story-relevant, character flaws — either that or his "flaws" are obviously meant to be endearing.

He has an unusual and dramatic Back Story. The canon protagonists are all overwhelmed with admiration for his beauty, wit, courage and other virtues, and are quick to adopt him as one of their True Companions, even characters who are usually antisocial and untrusting; if any character doesn't love him, that character gets an extremely unsympathetic portrayal. Other than that, the canon characters are quickly reduced to awestruck cheerleaders, watching from the sidelines as Gary Stu outstrips them in their areas of expertise and solves problems that have stymied them for the entire series.

1 - Sonic has flaws such as extreme obstinance regarding his own personal views (To the point that he'll even tolerate being battered nearly to death for them), a very high degree of impulsiveness which has gotten him into big trouble multiple times in instances that are extremely story-relevant (See the Capsule scene in SA2 and the intro to Unleashed in which Super Sonic's focus on belittling Eggman when he has him cornered is what distracts him long enough to allow Eggman to trap him, break the Earth apart, depower the Emeralds and turn him into a Werehog) and the often-proclaimed short temper. He is also a bad loser (See Sonic Riders). He is also unable to swim and it is implied in a conversation with Brenda the reporter in Unleashed that he is ashamed of this.

2 - Sonic's abilities are commonplace in the canon setting; Great running speed, transformation, acrobatic ability, the aptitude to fight robots many times his size and great physical strength despite his size. His abilities such as Chaos Control are believable and Sonic still uses that ability extremely rarely and only when it is necessitated. The overhwelming majority of Sonic's abilities stem from that one main trait; Speed. They are not convoluted or complex in a special snowflake-esque way.

3 - Not all of the characters love him such as certain NPC's in Unleashed and the villains. Lancelot, Caliburn and King Arthur all rightly criticize his sloppy swordsmanship in Black Knight and are notably NOT portrayed in any unsympathetic light in relation to this. When he does something very reckless such as attacking Eggman whilst he's holding Amy in Riders, Amy pulls him up and tears strips off of him which is deserved and is not portrayed in a "Pity this character" light.

4 - All of the characters being rendered as generic cheerleaders in Generations is due to poor writing or limitations placed on the use of those characters to a larger degree in the story by SEGA/Sonic Team and is not a fault of Sonic's character. If it IS a result of SEGA/Sonic Team sticking their oar in and putting limitations on the usage of characters other than Sonic then that's not the fault of the writers or Sonic.

5 - Sonic's backstory is a near-complete mystery. The only things that have ever been revealed about it have been his birthplace of Christmas Island and that his emnity with Eggman predates Sonic 1. There is nothing that even vaguely hints towards his past being an unhappy, unusual, dramatic or tragic one.

6 - Sonic's name is indicative of his most defining trait. This is extremely in-line with the general way in which Sonic characters are named.

7 - SONIC WILL ALWAYS WIN. That is what his position as the main character will always entail and is not intrinsically a Stu trait, It's what comes with the territory as a video game protagonist and the nature of Sonic games as self-contained one-game stories.

Your arguement of a Gary stu is flawed considering some of those if not all of those elements apply to Sonic in some games if not all, especially the archie comics, sonic x and the insufferable sonic and the story book games.
